Does anyone know what the purpose of the little chain thing is that comes with the grill? I put the grill together myself, assembly wasn't difficult, but I can't figure out what this little chain is for. In the assembly instructions, it is shown on the last page holding a match or something?
This chain is called the matchstick holder and is used to manually light the grill in case an issue should arise with the electronic igniter system.
To use the matchstick holder to light a Genesis, Genesis II, Genesis II LX, or Summit model, please use the following instructions, or reference your owner’s manual.
1. Open the lid.
2. Make sure all the burner control knobs are turned off.
3. Turn on the gas supply to the grill.
4. Put a match in the match holder and light the match.
5. Insert the match holder, with lit match, down through the cooking grates, past the Flavorizer Bars and adjacent to the left burner.
6. Push the left control in and turn it to START/HI to igniter the left burner. Check that the flame is lit by looking through the cooking grates. You should see a flame.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for the remaining burners. If any of the burners fails to ignite during the lighting process, within five seconds, stop, turn the burner control knob to OFF and wait five minutes to allow the gas to clear before you try again.
For a Spirit or Spirit II model use the following instructions.
1. Open the grill lid.
2. Make sure ALL burner control knobs are turned off. Check by pushing control knobs in and turning them clockwise until they stop.
3. Turn on the gas supply to the grill.
4. Put a match in the matchstick holder and light the match.
5. Insert the matchstick holder with lit match down through the cooking grates, past the Flavorizer Bars and to the burner.
6. Push burner control knob 1 (the far left control knob) in and turn it counterclockwise to the START/HI position. Check that the flame is lit by looking through the cooking grates. You should see a flame.
7. After burner 1 is lit, you can turn on burner 2 (and burner 3, if applicable). If any of the burners fails to ignite during the lighting process, within five seconds, stop, turn the burner control knob to OFF and wait five minutes to allow the gas to clear before you try again.
