It’d be a pretty tough ask to find an Australian backyard that hasn’t seen a ball bowled, wheelie bin stump rolled into place, automatic wickey chosen, or a six and out called as a well-worn cricket ball disappears over the neighbour’s fence. Cricket is deeply rooted in Australian history, a cornerstone of our culture, which makes it no surprise it’s also a part of Weber’s history in Australia too.”

As has been excitedly announced, Weber is the new naming partner for the WBBL for the coming season, however our journey with women’s cricket really kicked off back in 2002, with the McDonald family. This is also when women’s cricket was run by the South Australian Women’s Cricket Association (SAWCA).

Nearly twenty years ago Fiona McDonald, the daughter of the man who introduced Weber to Australia, brought Australian cricket and Weber barbecues worlds together. This is more than a story of having a post-game barbecue or cheering your daughter's team on. When Fiona was playing pathways cricket in South Australia, Weber featured on the Scorpions U/17 uniform, a direct sponsor of the team, supporting their campaign. Fiona was a talented, young cricketer who played 35 WNCL matches for the South Australian Scorpions in the early 2000’s.

This little piece of history is how the partnership between Weber and the WBBL kicked off. Reigniting this connection seemed a natural step in Weber Australia’s journey and we are excited to partner with women’s cricket once more, also coming on board as a league partner for the BBL, as this thrilling sport continues to grow and inspire the next generation of young Australians.

For Weber and cricket enthusiasts alike, this coming together of two icons should have your tastebuds tingling! Over the coming season there will be plenty of chances to interact and engage with both Weber, cricket and the two combined. The best way to keep up with all of this news?  Follow us on social, keep an eye on our website and make sure you’re tuning in to the games.  Better still, if you can, grab your friends and family and head to a match!

Weber are excited to bring the fabric of Summer together with BBQ, cricket and good times; we can’t wait to see you on the pitch!
