Propane tank manufacturers have put a tremendous amount of time and effort into making sure that propane tanks are safe to use, but there are some things to consider whenever you’re using a propane grill.

Safely using a propane tank with a propane grill requires a correct and secure connection between the regulator and the tank valve.

Before using a propane tank, take some time to inspect the gasket on the propane tank. They can become warped or damaged over time. Pointing the propane tank valve into the sun can give you a good view of the tank valve gasket. A tank valve gasket should be perfectly round and free of any cracks or splits.

It’s also important to make sure that the propane tank is installed properly into the grill, as outlined in the owner’s manual. Installing the tank in a manner other than what has been recommended could cause stress on the hose/regulator connection, resulting in a gas leak.

When connecting a propane tank to a regulator, it’s always a good idea to perform a gas leak test. Make sure all of the control knobs on the grill are in the off position. Once the regulator has been screwed onto the tank valve turn on the tank valve. Spray some soapy water on the tank to regulator connection. If you see bubbles form turn off the tank valve, disconnect the regulator, and inspect the tank valve gasket. Try reconnecting the regulator and perform a soapy water test again. If there is still a leak try a second propane tank. If a leak is still present, please reach out to Weber Customer Service at 1-800-446-1071 or support@weberstephen.com.  NEVER USE A GRILL IF LEAK IS PRESENT!
