FAQs

Unless otherwise specified, when a recipe in this handbook requires you to ‘roast’ it is recommended that you remove your hotplate (if you have one) and use a convection tray and a roasting trivet. To ensure that the bottom of your roast is not scorched by the hot grill bars.


The convection tray and trivet used together transform your Q™ from cooking in barbecue mode to oven mode in seconds. The convection tray is engineered with vents designed to circulate the heat above, below and perfectly all around the food. The vents also allow the fats from the roast to drain away, falling between the grill bars.

Set-up is simple

  1. Place a convection tray on the grill so the four locating tabs sit inside the covered areas of your cooking grill. The tray should now be positioned in the middle of your Q™.
  2. Place the roasting trivet on the tray. You are now set up for roasting or baking.

When you are roasting or baking you must pre-heat the barbecue. The instructions for pre-heating the Q™ for roasting and baking can be found in your cooking booklet received with the bbq. All models have slightly different roast settings.

Unlike an indoor oven, your Q™ uses natural convection, allowing you to cook in a higher temperature range. This is how your Q™ is able to produce such wonderful, flavoursome roasts and also bake perfect pizzas, muffins, puddings etc. You may notice a drop in the temperature reading when you first open the lid and put your roast in the barbecue. Don’t worry, this is completely normal and the temperature reading will rise again over the cooking time. Remember, there is no need to turn your food when roasting or baking, so try not to open the lid unnecessarily.

Pre-Heat Roasting and Baking Family Q

To pre-heat your Family Q™; Open the lid and place the convection tray and the trivet in position.

  1. Turn both control knobs to the START/HIGH position.
  2. Press the ignition button to light the barbecue.
  3. Allow the barbecue to run for 10 minutes (On high) with the lid closed.
  4. Now that your Family Q™ is pre-heated, turn the small burner to low setting (for 20mins).
  5. Leave the large burner control knob on the high setting.
  6. You can now place your food inside the Family Q™.

After 20 mins of cooking turn the small control knob off and leave large control knob on high.

IMPORTANT: Do not leave the small burner control knob on for longer than 25 minutes while roasting or baking.

Pre-Heat Roasting and Baking: Weber Q

  1. To preheat your Q, open the lid and place the convection tray and trivet in position.
  2. Turn the burner control knob to START/HI. Immediately press the ignition button to light the barbecue.
  3. Preheat the barbecue for 10 minutes with the burner control knob on START/HI and the lid closed.
  4. Once your is preheated, turn the burner control knob to the medium setting. Your Q is ready for roasting and baking.
  5. You can now place your food inside the Q. Continue cooking using these settings until the end of the cooking time.

Pre-Heat Roasting and Baking: baby Q

  1. To preheat your baby Q, open the lid and place the convection tray and trivet in position.
  2. Turn the burner control knob to START/HI immediately press the ignition button to light the barbecue.
  3. Preheat the barbecue for 10 minutes with the burner control knob on START/HI and the lid closed.
  4. Once your baby Q is preheated, turn the burner control knob to the roast setting
  5. Your baby Q is ready for roasting and baking. You can now place your food inside the baby Q. Continue cooking using these settings until the end of the cooking time.

Barbecuing

Your Weber Q has been designed to cook magnificent steaks. To get the best results with steak, cook on the grill bars rather than on a hotplate. Only use a hotplate when there is the potential for a lot of fat to come away from the meat or when cooking eggs, pancakes and the like. When a recipe in this cooking guide requires you to ‘barbecue’, it is recommended that you turn the meat only once, halfway through cooking. Always barbecue with the lid closed, these barbecues are not designed to cook with the lid up. Even when cooking on a hotplate always cook with the lid down.

Whether you are barbecuing meat on the grill or on the breakfast plate, it is important that you preheat the barbecue before cooking.

Preheating and barbecuing: Family Q

  • To preheat your Family Q, open the lid and turn both control knobs to START/ HI.
  • Immediately press the ignition button to light the barbecue.
  • Once alight, close the lid and allow the barbecue to heat up for 10 minutes. Your Family Q is preheated and ready for barbecuing.
  • Leave both burners set on START/HI throughout the barbecuing process when using the grill.
  • Remember to always cook with the lid down.
  • If you are cooking with a hotplate you will need to allow time for it to heat up. Always preheat the plate with the lid down and test it with a droplet of water to make sure it’s hot enough to cook on

Preheating and barbecuing: Weber Q

  • To preheat your Q, open the lid and turn both control knobs to START/ HI.
  • Immediately press the ignition button to light the barbecue.
  • Once alight, close the lid and allow the barbecue to heat up for 10 minutes. Your Q is now preheated and ready for barbecuing.
  • Leave the burner setting on START/HI throughout the barbecuing process.
  • Remember to always cook with the lid down.
  • If you are cooking with a hotplate, allow 10 to 15 minutes for it to heat up. Always preheat the plate with the lid down and test it with a droplet of water to make sure it’s hot enough to cook on

Preheating and barbecuing: Baby Q

  • To preheat your baby Q, open the lid, unfold the work surfaces and turn the burner control knob to START/HI
  • Immediately press the ignition button to light the barbecue.
  • Once alight, close the lid and allow the barbecue to heat up for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Your baby Q is now preheated and ready for barbecuing. Leave the burner setting on START/HI throughout the barbecuing process.
  • Remember to always cook with the lid down.
  • If you are cooking with a hotplate, allow 10 to 15 minutes for it to heat up. Always preheat the plate with the lid down and test it with a droplet of water to make sure it’s hot enough to cook on

Temperature After Pre-Heating

These readings are only an indication of temperature at the end of a 10 minute pre heat. The temperature will continue to rise the longer you leave the bbq on. If a customer is wanting to roast something at 180°C, none of these bbqs will maintain such a low temperature over the duration of cooking.
We recommend in our Q handbooks that bbq roasting should be done at a temperature between 200°-225°C. This range can be maintained by using the roast setting in the handbooks.
