To keep your Weber Slate Griddle in great condition, a little regular maintenance goes a long way! Follow these simple steps to ensure your Slate is always ready for the next barbecue.

1. Regular Griddle Care

Cleaning your griddle after each use is key to maintaining that smooth cooking surface. Once the griddle has cooled for about 5 minutes, use a metal scraper to remove any food debris or grease and push everything into the grease management hole. If there's any stuck-on food, a small splash of room-temperature water will help loosen it (just avoid cold water on a hot griddle). Finish by wiping the surface with a paper towel, and you're good to go.

2. Season Your Griddle

Your Slate griddle surface is designed to be non-stick and resistant to rust, but if you notice food starting to stick or the surface looking a bit dry, it’s time for a quick re-seasoning.

All you need is a little neutral oil (like vegetable or canola oil) and some paper towels. Wipe down the entire griddle surface with a generous amount of oil, ensuring an even coating across all areas. Light your burners and heat the griddle for about 10 minutes or until the surface starts to smoke. Once the smoke subsides (usually around 20 minutes), turn off the burners and let the griddle cool completely.

This process not only boosts the non-stick performance but also helps protect against rust. Repeat the seasoning process as needed - especially if you haven’t used the griddle in a while.

3. Grease Management System

Your Slate is equipped with a grease management system that collects grease and food debris in a disposable drip pan. Before each barbecue, check the grease tray and pan for excess buildup and empty if needed. This keeps your barbecue safe and free from any potential spoiled fat contamination.

4. Check Your Burners and Hose

Regularly inspecting the burner ports and gas hose is important for safe and optimal performance.

Clean the burner ports with a stainless-steel bristle brush to remove any debris that might block the flame.

Inspect the gas hose for cracks, cuts, or wear. If it’s damaged, don’t use the griddle until you’ve contacted Weber for a replacement hose—safety first!

Every time you swap over your gas bottle or replace your hose, you should perform the Soapy Water Test to check the gas connection and ensure there are no leaks. CLICK HERE to learn how to conduct the test.

5. Preheat Before Cooking

Preheating your griddle is essential to get the best results and prevent food from sticking. Before cooking, ignite your burners and preheat the griddle on high for 10-15 minutes. This helps burn off any leftover residue and ensures the griddle is evenly heated. Once preheated, adjust the burners to your desired cooking temperature.

6. Exterior Cleaning

To keep your Slate looking as good as it cooks, clean the exterior surfaces regularly:

Stainless Steel: Use a non-abrasive stainless-steel cleaner and a microfiber cloth to wipe in the direction of the grain.

Porcelain-Enamelled or Painted Surfaces: A simple wash with warm, soapy water will keep these parts looking fresh. After washing, dry the surfaces thoroughly to prevent rust or water spots.

By following these steps, your Weber Slate Griddle will stay in tip-top condition, ready to serve up delicious meals for years to come!
